Information Architecture

In broad terms, Information Architecture (IA) within web design is about helping people understand their environment and find what they’re looking for, both online and in the real world. IA involves the structuring of a website that allows your users to understand where the information they want is in relation to their position. This results in the creation of site maps, hierarchies, categorisations, navigation, and metadata. When our content strategists begin separating content and dividing it into categories, he or she is practicing information architecture. When Eonic designers sketch a top level menu to help users understand where they are on a site, again, he or she is practicing's a crucial element of designing for the web.

Regardless of what task is being accomplished, here are some of the questions we ask when performing information architecture:

  • What is the flow of users through your website?
  • How does the site help the user catalog their information?
  • How is that information presented back to the user?
  • Is that information helping your customer and driving decisions?

To answer these questions, our information architects focus on a number of things, namely:

  • The target audience
  • The technologies related to the website, and
  • The data that will be presented throughout the site.

Based on our Discovery consultancy document, we will create whatever user journeys and site maps are required to pin down how the overall content will be organised.


...are the blueprints for a web page. In fact, they're also known as screen blueprints or page schematics and allow us to work on how the information will be structured within a page before the visual design phase has begun. It gives us page layouts to demonstrate what interface elements will exist on key webpages and is a critical part of the Interaction Design process. Web design without wireframes would be like an architect building a house based around your ideas but without a plan, and hoping the doors and windows will all magically be in the right place upon completion. We know, it sounds crazy...and yet some people build web sites that way! 

Our wireframes aim to provide you and us with a visual understanding of pages early in a project to obtain your approval before the creative phase gets under way. Wireframes can also be used to create the global and secondary navigation to ensure the terminology and structure used for the site meets your users' expectations.

So, why do we do this? Primarily, to save time and money, as it is quicker and more cost-efficient to review and amend the structure of the key pages in a wireframe format. Iterating the development of the wireframes to a final version will provide you and our design team confidence that the page is catering to user needs whilst fulfilling the key business and project objectives. We create wireframes for key pages within your site to show what information will be featured, how it will be arranged and which elements will be the most important.

Design Visuals

This is the stage that the layman typically refers to as 'web design', but as discussed, it's just one facet of a multi-staged, iterative process. Once the wireframes are complete and the structure of a page has been agreed, we reach the exciting stage of composing design visuals to show you exactly how a finished web page should look. Here we focus on the colours, fonts and style of a page and look at the spacing and proportions of elements. We will show the appearance of headings, boxes, links, navigation and the style for any imagery or illustrations.
