User experience (UX)

User Experience Design , or UX , is often used interchangeably with terms such as User Interface Design and Usability . However, while usability and user interface design are important aspects of UX, they are in fact subsets of it.


Wikipedia defines UX as...

“The process of enhancing user satisfaction with a product by improving the usability, accessibility, and pleasure provided in the interaction with the product.” 

Eonic's UX designers consider the 'Why', 'What' and 'How' of web usage. The 'Why' involves the users’ motivations for performing a task, the 'What' addresses functionality and the 'How' relates to designing in an accessible and aesthetically pleasing way. We always start with the 'Why' before determining the 'What' and the 'How' in order to create websites that users can have meaningful, engaging experiences with.

We focus on having a deep understanding of users; what they need, what they value, their abilities and also their limitations. We also account for your business goals and objectives, so best practices promote improving the quality of the user’s interaction with and perceptions of your website and its related services.

From this you can see in order for there to be a meaningful and valuable user experience, information must be:

  • Useful - Content should be original and fulfill a need
  • Usable - The site must be easy to use
  • Desirable - Image, identity, brand, and other design elements used to evoke emotion and appreciation
  • Discoverable - Content needs to be navigable and locatable onsite and offsite
  • Accessible - content needs to be accessible to people with disabilities
  • Credible - users must trust and believe what you tell them

Eonic's UX process is all about successful user-centered design, encompassing the principles of human-computer interaction (HCI) and goes further to include the following disciplines:

  • Project Management - We plan and organise a project and its resources. This includes identifying and managing the project life cycle, applying it to the user-centered design process, formulating the project team, and efficiently guiding the team through all phases until project completion.
  • User Research - We focus on understanding user behaviours, needs, and motivations through observation techniques, task analysis, and other feedback.
  • Usability Evaluation - We pay close attention to how well users can learn and use a website to achieve their goals. It also refers to how satisfied users are with that process.
  • Information Architecture (IA) - Is where we decide how information is organised, structured, and presented to users.
  • User Interface Design - We anticipate what users might need to do and ensuring that the interface has elements that are easy to access, understand and use to facilitate those actions. 
  • Interaction Design (IxD) - We create engaging interactive systems with well thought out behaviours.
  • Visual Design - We ensure an aesthetically pleasing interface that is in line with brand goals.
  • Content Strategy - We can help write and curate useful content by planning the creation, delivery and governance behind it.
  • Accessibility - We design for how a disabled individual accesses or benefits from a site, system or application.
  • Web Performance Management (WPM) - We collect, report and analyse website data.

In summary, Eonic's UX process involves user research, creating personas, designing wire-frames and interactive prototypes, as well as constant, iterative testing. Critically, our designers are the users’ advocate and keep their needs at the center of all design and development efforts.
